Today’s guest artist Tom Mason demonstrated no less than three paintings. Two in watercolour of a lake scene with a stormy sky and a quick third one using water colour and acrylic of a still life study. Members watched with great interest and later some tried the paintings for themselves.

Time stopped everyone from finishing their paintings so hopefully more members will be continuing next week.

29th June 2017

Todays meeting we tried a different approach by watching an Artist doing a demonstration from a DVD. The presentation was how to paint a Buddleia using a sponge. We first ran through the video to see the finished painting, then started it again and stopped it at convenient spots so that members could do a section at a time. Quite a few members had a go at this and it appears to be well received and may be something we might investigate for the future. For members wanting to finish their painting you will find a screen shot of the completed work in the worksheet tab.

Here we have a good selection of finished paintings from the day.

15th June 2017

Everything was upside down today at the clubs meeting. Well, not everything, but the painting was. Janet demonstrated to us on how to draw and paint from an upside down perspective. This a cognitive look at a photograph so that the artist is not trying copy the photograph but to copy a shape instead. Here we can see Janet painting a Jug and teapot, also doing the same with a picture of a cockerel. A copy of the teapot/jug and cockerel can be found in the worksheet folder for members unable to attend today.

John Morris demonstrated to members how to paint a Venice watercolour scene using just two colours, ultramarine blue and violet, and using white guache for highlights. The emphasis was on tonal values and building up tones from weaker to stronger mixes.

Here John was explaining tonal value by using more or less water to the paint.

Visit to Bridgewater Day Care Centre, Golborne

Jan and Diane from Golborne and Lowton art group visited Bridgewater Day Care Centre on Friday 21st April 2017, to display the group's artwork.

The day centre's morning group participated in discussions that our paintings prompted.

The theme was the industrial heritage of Golborne and the area and jobs in the past.

Clients viewed paintings and drawings including pictures of women pit lassies of the 1800's and Victorian times and a detailed drawing of Golborne Colliery. We discussed the role of women at the coalface in the 1960's.

The colliery artwork prompted discussion of the mining disaster within living memory at that colliery, with consequent loss of life. The area round the pit was described for us in some detail by one of the Bridgewater group.

Ron told us that he was married at a church, St Luke's, Lowton, in 1954, when we showed a watercolour by one of our art group members.

Everyday Life in earlier decades was discussed prompting past memories.

Everyone had comments to make, contributing significantly to a successful morning.

We are grateful to Lisa and the team at the centre for the opportunity to show our work.

The heritage artwork will shortly be on public view at Golborne Library.

Details of the works to be exhibited are also on our website.

May 8th 2017

One of our members John Morris has submitted a few new painting's for his Gallery in the work area, this is just one of them. Take a look at the rest at John's work. Click here.

20th April 2017

Today Ian followed on from pastel work last week to demonstrate wet pastel work

13th April 2017

Today's meeting, members tried a different approach to painting than we had ever tried before. First of all we did a watercolour painting to lay down the basic background. When this was dry we applied soft pastels. The watercolour was done wet into wet and very loose and can produce unexpected results. We waited until this was completely dry before applying the pastel. Janet provided us with excellent guidance for the exercise.

Here we have members paintings. From left to right: Janet Bilsbury, Jim Atkinson, Tony Triscari, Tony Jones, Mike Harrison, Anna Dawson and Angela Dunn. All so different and all so colorful.

6th April 2017

Today some members completed or finished the painting of the Bridge demonstrated last week by Steve Williams.   Again many different styles, but only Ian Scott stuck to the rules of pen and wash, as he explained to me that in the true sense it should be a pen drawing and a colour wash to finish. This can be seen in Ian's finished painting.

Other members who completed their painting were from left to right Tony Jones, Mike Harrison, Mike Muddimer, Jimmy Bamber, Jim Atkinson, Janet Bilsbury and Angela Dunn. A larger view can be seen in the respective artist folder.

The age UK bosses are coming down to see the display's. There is a choir, line dancing, a group doing George formby songs among others. Diane is finding out how much space we will have.

If anyone is struggling to find a subject to paint or draw, the club has a few photographs, Leigh Life web site has many images and has been cleared with them to paint. They don't own the copyright only the rights to publish them.

There are also many pictures on a Facebook group called 'Old Leigh Photographs'.

The paintings can be in any media and any size (within reason). They will be displayed on a table along with other Art groups in the area.

Here is one to give us a start from Mike Harrison showing a Barge.

Please note July 14th will be at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club not at our usual Parkside group meeting. We should have an enjoyable day painting outdoors. There are facilities that we are able to use at the club, toilets and for brewing up but you will need to bring your own lunch. If by chance the weather is inclement we can use the room upstairs which looks onto the flash to paint.

Sadly our previous chair of the club, Terry Fairbrother passed away in January after a period of illness.  Terry was founder member of the club, which has benefitted enormously from his input over the years. The club made a donation to cancer research and his wife has written to thank the members for the donation and their support. We send kind thoughts and good wishes to his wife and family.
